About this book

Al-Muwatta was compiled in the eighth century by Imam Malik ibn Anas, the great scholar of Madinah and founder of the Maliki school. It is among the earliest surviving written works of Islamic law and hadith.

Imam Malik combined three things: hadith of the Prophet ﷺ, reports of the Companions and their students, and the established practice of the people of Madinah, the city where the Prophet ﷺ lived. The chapters cover purification, prayer, fasting, zakah, hajj, marriage, trade, inheritance, judgements and many details of daily life.

This edition presents the Arabic with Aisha Bewley's English translation.
