About this book

The Compendium of Knowledge and Wisdom is Abdassamad Clarke's translation of Jami' al-'Ulum wa'l-Hikam by the fourteenth-century scholar Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali. It is the most famous commentary ever written on Imam an-Nawawi's Forty Hadith.

Ibn Rajab added eight more hadith to an-Nawawi's collection, making fifty. For each, he explains its meaning in depth, brings related verses and hadith, discusses the views of the early scholars, and draws out its implications for belief, law, character and the inner life.

It is a substantial work, best read slowly, one hadith at a time.
