About this book

Towards Understanding the Qur'an is an abridged English version of Tafhim al-Qur'an, the famous commentary by Sayyid Abul A'la Mawdudi, translated and edited by Zafar Ishaq Ansari. Mawdudi wrote his commentary over three decades with the aim of making the Quran's message clear and relevant to modern readers.

Each surah begins with an introduction explaining its name, the period of its revelation, its historical background and its main themes. The translation is presented in readable paragraphs, and explanatory notes clarify the meaning, context and practical lessons of each passage.

This single-volume edition condenses the original's notes, making it possible to read through the entire Quran with commentary without needing a multi-volume set.
