About this book

The Study Quran is a landmark scholarly project led by Seyyed Hossein Nasr, a professor of Islamic studies at George Washington University, together with a team of scholars. It offers a new English translation accompanied by a detailed, verse-by-verse commentary.

The commentary draws on dozens of classical and later tafsir works from across the Islamic tradition — Sunni and Shia, legal, theological and spiritual — and summarises how different scholars have understood each verse. Rather than arguing for one view, it lays out the range of interpretations, giving readers a sense of how the Quran has been read through Islamic history.

At the back of the book, a series of essays by leading scholars covers subjects such as the Quran and law, the Quran and ethics, its influence on Islamic art and architecture, and its relationship with other scriptures. The volume is large and heavy, best suited to a desk or study table.
