Tafsir Ibn Kathir, written by the fourteenth-century Damascene scholar Ismail ibn Kathir, is one of the most famous and trusted commentaries on the Quran. It is valued above all for its method: explaining the Quran first by other verses of the Quran, then by the hadith of the Prophet ﷺ, then by the statements of the Companions and their students.

This ten-volume English edition is an abridgment prepared under scholarly supervision. It keeps Ibn Kathir's approach and his key narrations while removing repetition and the longer discussions of chains of narration, making the work manageable for English readers. Each verse is presented in Arabic with its translation, followed by the commentary.

Because it relies so heavily on hadith and early sources, it is an excellent way to understand how the first generations of Muslims understood the Quran.
