About this book
Purification of the Heart is Hamza Yusuf's translation and commentary of Matharat al-Qulub, a poem by the Mauritanian scholar Imam Mawlud.
The poem describes the spiritual diseases of the heart — miserliness, wantonness, hatred, envy, fear of poverty, ostentation, arrogance, love of the world, anger, heedlessness and more — together with their signs, symptoms and cures. Hamza Yusuf's commentary explains each disease and draws practical lessons, connecting classical psychology with modern life.
It is one of the most widely read books on Islamic spirituality in English.
