About this book

Abdullah Yusuf Ali's translation, first published in the 1930s, has been one of the most widely read English renderings of the Quran for almost a century. Generations of English-speaking Muslims grew up with it, and its phrases are still quoted in sermons and books today.

What sets this edition apart is its commentary. Yusuf Ali added thousands of numbered notes explaining the historical background of verses, the meanings of Arabic words, the moral and spiritual lessons of each passage, and connections between different parts of the Quran. Many surahs also open with an introduction, and some passages are accompanied by short poetic summaries.

The English is somewhat formal and old-fashioned compared to recent translations, which many readers find gives it a dignified, timeless tone. The Arabic text appears alongside the translation.
