About this book

In The History of the Qur'anic Text, Professor Muhammad Mustafa al-Azami, a distinguished hadith scholar, traces how the Quran was preserved from the moment of revelation to the written mushaf we have today.

The first part covers the Quran's transmission during the Prophet's ﷺ lifetime, its compilation under Abu Bakr, the standardised copies sent out under 'Uthman, and the development of Arabic script, dots and vowel marks. Al-Azami explains the system of oral and written transmission and the role of chains of narration.

The second part examines the textual histories of the Old and New Testaments, and the final part responds to claims made by some Western academics about the Quran's origins. The book is scholarly in tone and includes photographs of early manuscripts.
